American Beauty is … American Beauty is one of my all time favorite movies…well acted, beautifully scored and written so as to appeal to everyman, not just the critical elite, such as they are. As he said: how could he be angry, when he was surrounded by so much beauty?
My favorite thing … My favorite thing about this scene, and all in all the whole movie, is that it uses language that isn’t too intellectual sounding, even though it conveys a beautiful, beautiful message. There aren’t any words that would make the scene sound excessive or otherwise gaudy, which I believe creates a fantastic mood that makes this movie one off the most enjoyable to watch.
That makes a lot of … That makes a lot of sense actually yes.
I don’t know why i just kept dragging his son into the picture I assumed he’d have something to do with it .But you’re explanations the most viable I’ve heard so far.

PS: I apologise, but I also think that to say that the colonel “kissed him to see if he responded to it and that way he could tell if he was gay and having an affair with his son” is a bit silly, because Lester clearly rejects the kiss (he says “I’m sorry, I think you’ve got the wrong idea”). This means that not only does Lester now know the Colonel has gay feelings, but that he also rejected his advances. This is all too humiliating for the Colonel and so Lester is shot.

So the Colonel has to kill Lester, because he is the only one who knows his secret.
Throughout the film, Lester and Ricky are the only 2 characters who realise they can be most happy in life if they just try to be true to their own desires. This is why, inspired by Ricky, Lester quits the job he hates, starts working at a burger bar & relaxing again etc – because it’s who he is. It may not be the “American Dream” of success, but it makes him happy & isn’t a lie.

This “lying to yourself” theme is again seen when Mena Suvari’s character pretends she has had sex with loads of guys, but is actually using this to disguise the fact that she is a virgin, which she thinks must be “uncool” in some way. The Colonel acts in very homophobic manner because he cannot cope with his own attraction to men and wishes to cover it up. When he believes Lester is the same, he tries to kiss him, but Lester rejects him.

Mate, I’m sorry, but SgtMovieMaker is right. This film is largely about people will project illusions in order to cover up the unhappiness and insecurities they feel with their own identities. They lie to themselves to try and make themselves think they are happy. For example, as The Real Estate King says; “In order to be successful, one must project an image of success at all times” -which is what Caroline does to make up for the fact she is a bad estate agent.

He shot him because …
He shot him because he thought he was having an affair with his son.

…if that were true then he wouldn’t have shot him….he was a gay marine
No he just kissed …
No he just kissed him to see if he responded to it and that way he could tell if he was gay and having an affair with his son.
