How long after I become a Certified Massage Therapist do I need to carry insurance? Where do I go or who do I call to get insurance to practice massage therapy?
In most states you will be required to hold liability insurance for massage in order to receive your license and in some cases for certification. The main 2 massage insurance providers are ABMP and AMTA. Both are great organizations and can answer any questions you may have about coverage.
Side note – Are you currently in school right now? And what state are you located in?
Keep in mind that if they sue you they can only come after your cash assetts.
You may consider not carrying insurance, since you won’t have any money in the bank.

It’s true you are not required to carry insurance by law. And Judy is right that you probably won’t have any money in the bank if you choose massage as a job. The real question is, do you want to leave yourself open for a devastating lawsuit (even if the client can’t collect) or would you rather protect yourself and your clients in the rare case of injury? If you choose to work as an employee, most employers require that you purchase and maintain your own insurance as long as you are employed.
Insurance will pay for any damages that might happen so you wouldn’t be personally liable. Smart practitioners carry insurance the entire time they are massaging. It’s less than $250 a year for full protection and peace of mind.
