Any studies on how waxing your aircraft reduce costs?
It is logical that waxing your aircraft reduces drag, but are there any studies that shows how much money it saves you?
Thanks
Whatever small drag improvement you will gain will probably be off set by the added weight of the wax. It’s not worth the effort. The reason AA doesn’t paint their planes is because of the weight savings. Aircraft paint can add 200 to 400 pounds per airplane which is significant in determining usable payload.
As you know, if you reduce the drag you reduce the amount of fuel it takes to fly that beast. The only studies I know of about external surfaces on airplanes is the one on commercial aircraft that deals with paint or not paint and that is why American Airlines has polished aluminum sides.
